Cardijn Lecture with Cardinal Czerny

Dear Friends,

We begin this newsletter with an appeal for prayers for Sydney priest, Fr Peter Maher, who is suffering from serious illness and is moving into palliative care. Peter has been a wonderful supporter of the Cardijn cause, indeed of many causes, for many years. Jesus prayed that he be spared death on the cross. In this spirit, perhaps we could also call for Cardijn's intercession to heal Peter and enable him to continue his vital ministries.

This month, we also remember two great Cardijn disciples from South Africa, the Dominican YCS and YCW chaplain, Fr Albert Nolan, author of Jesus Before Christianity, and Jean Tyacke, an American extension worker who helped launch the YCW there, who both died earlier this month.

Looking to the future, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, a former YCW chaplain from Luxembourg, calls for the Church to focus on its mission beginning from the reality of people's lives.

Currently, I'm in Europe, where we've been busy with the organising of the Jocist Women's Seminar, which is about to start in Leuven, Belgium. See below for details.

And coming up next month is our second Cardijn Lecture. This year we are privileged to have Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ, prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, who will speak on his new book, "Siblings All, Sign of the Times, The Social Teaching of Pope Francis."

Over 100 people have registered already and we request your help in promoting the event among your friends, colleagues and contacts.

Finally, over in Lima, Peru, the International YCW has begun its Covid-delayed 15th World Council. We wish them well in their vital work!

Cardijn Lecture 2022 - Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ - Sign of the Times, Siblings All, The Social Teaching of Pope Francis
Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ
ACI is pleased to announce that Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ, president of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, has accepted our invitation to deliver the Cardijn Lecture for 2022.

Cardinal Czerny will address the theme “Siblings All, Sign of the Times: The Social Teaching of Pope Francis,” which is also the title of his newly published book of the same name jointly authored with Italian priest, Fr Christian Barone.

Appropriately Cardinal Czerny’s Roman parish is that of St Michael Archangel, Pietralata, the poor, working class parish chosen by Cardijn as his own cardinatial parish in 1965.

Prior to his current posting, he worked for many years with refugees and migrants, including as head of the Migrant and Refugee Section in the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

RIP Fr Albert Nolan o.p., author of ‘Jesus before Christianity’
Albert Nolan
Liberation theologian, apartheid opponent and former South African YCS and YCW chaplain, Fr Albert Nolan o.p. has died at the age of 88.

Born in Cape Town in 1934 in a lower middle-class family of Irish extraction, young Dennis Nolan worked as a bank clerk after finishing school until he joined the Order of Preachers in 1954. Taking the name Albert, he completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Nicholas Priory in Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, before completing doctoral studies at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the Angelicum, in Rome.

Author of the best-selling "Jesus Before Christianity," he also played a key role in the publication of the 1985 "Kairos Document," a call from pastors and theologians to the churches of South Africa to fully embrace the struggle for democracy and to put their institutions at the service of nonviolent resistance.

Jean Tyacke, unionist and YCW extension worker in South Africa
Jean Tyacke
Jean Tyacke, who came to South Africa from her native United States as a YCW extension worker, has died in Johannesburg, just a few days before her 95th birthday.

“She might have been the last of the giant Young Christian Workers-trained unionists active in the apartheid era,” writes Paul Goller in the South African Southern Cross magazine.

Jean was born in the United States in 1927 and came to South Africa in 1959. Engagingly she retained her accent over the rest of her life. But, more characteristically, she continued her voting for Democratic presidential candidates up to Joe Biden.

In Chicago, probably her favourite city, Jean came to YCW early, after having been very active in Young Christian Students In her schooldays. Even then, she said, she saw herself more as a teambuilder than as a dominant leader; the apartheid regime came to dislike both.

Church's mission starts from reality: Cardinal Hollerich
Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich
In an interview with La Civilta Cattolica, Luxembourg Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich has called for the Church to focus on its mission, starting from the reality that makes us all children of the same Father.

“I believe that today in Europe we are suffering from a pathology, which, that is, we are unable to see clearly what the mission of the Church is,” Cardinal Hollerich, a former chaplain to the Luxembourg YCW, warned.

“We always talk about structures, which is certainly not a bad thing, because structures are important and certainly need to be rethought. But there is not enough talk of the mission of the Church. Which is to announce the Gospel. To announce, and above all to testify, the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.

“A witness that the Christian must interpret mainly through his commitment in the world for the safeguarding of creation, for justice, for peace," he said.

Cardijn's Greatest Battle: Lay apostolate vs Apostolate of the Faithful at Vatican II
Cardijn's Greatest Battle
To mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council on 11 October 1962, Stefan Gigacz presented the October ACI webinar outlining Cardijn's greatest battle to convince the Council of his conception of the “specifically lay apostolate of lay people” as distinguished from the “apostolate of the faithful” common to all the baptised.

It was a distinction that many theologians and bishops with no personal experience of the Cardijn movements failed to grasp. Yet, as the documents of Vatican II attest, Cardijn and his colleagues were ultimately successful in their endeavours as evidenced by §31 of Lumen Gentium, which made clear that “the laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God.”

In this month’s webinar, Stefan Gigacz explains the struggle that Cardijn and his network faced in their efforts to achieve this.

Prayers for Peter
peter-maher
We ask you to remember in your prayers, Sydney priest, Fr Peter Maher, who has moved this week to Calvary Palliative Care in Kogarah, NSW.

Peter is a longstanding member of the Australian Cardijn Institute and has supported the Cardijn cause for many years. He played a key role in the revival of the Pax Romana ICMICA movement in Australia, where it was known as the Australian Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs (ACMICA).

From 2005-2008, Peter and ACMICA partnered with the Cardijn Community International to organise a series of New Pentecost programs, including sponsoring a visit by Brazilian Chico Whitaker, the co-founder of the World Social Forum, as well as Malaysian Jesuit and expert on Indigenous spiritualities, Fr Jojo Fung.

Prior to his retirement, Peter served as parish priest of St Joseph's, Newtown, NSW, where he worked closely with the LGBTQI+ community. As chair of Rachel's Vineyard Retreat Ministries, he also provided pastoral care to many women touched by abortion. He was also chaplain at the University of Technology Sydney, where he still sits on the Human Research Ethics Committee.

He has been editor of National Council of Priests' magazine, The Swag, and is also chaplain to PALMS Australia.
