In this video, Professor James Franklin of the Australian Catholic Historical Society, recounts the story of Irish-born Melbourne Archbishop Daniel Mannix’s enforced stay in England in 1920.
As Prof. Franklin writes, the incident occurred “when Mannix was arrested by the Royal Navy on the high seas to prevent him landing in Ireland.”
“Imagine Greta Thunberg as an archbishop and you’ll get the feel of the event,” he commented.
The talk on 5 July 2025 was hosted by the English Catholic Historical Society.
