Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Holy See Nuncio to the United States joined participants at the Lay Mission and Vocation Conference in Rome for an online conversation on 9 October 2024.
As a young priest in his home diocese of Rennes, France, Cardinal Pierre served as chaplain to a local team of the Jeunesse Indépendante Chrétienne (JIC), a Specialised Catholic Action for young people with a professional background.
The JIC was modelled on the Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne (JOC) or Young Christian Workers (YCW), following the see-judge-act method pioneered by Cardinal Joseph Cardijn.
Cardinal Pierre’s mother was also a pioneer of the JIC movement as well as its adult counterpart, the Action Catholic Indépendante, working closely with Marie Louise Monnet, the movement founder, who was a lay auditor at Vatican II.
He became nuncio to the USA in April 2016 and was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in October 2023.
