For our December 2024, ACI webinar, Mark Ager and Joe Catania will recall Cardijn’s iconic lecture series, The Young Worker Faces Life, which he delivered 75 years ago in 1949.
From 1931 until 1957, Cardijn presented an annual series of lectures to Belgian YCW leaders at a summer school held in the town of Godinne.
The Young Worker Faces Life series is often considered as one of the most important of these, outlining the jocist method of leadership and lay apostolate formation.
In 1961, the Melbourne YCW published a translation of these lectures, which have been popular ever since.

Mark Ager
Mark joined the Salisbury Young Christian Workers (YCW) in Adelaide. The Chaplain was Hugh O’Sullivan. Through the review of life and enquiries Mark learned to apply Christianity in everyday life including work. After a stint as group president Mark joined the Diocesan Team where the Chaplain was Tom Gleeson.
Mark was encouraged to read a book called, ‘Young Worker Faces Life’ which was a collection of talks by the founder of the YCW Joseph Cardijn. It helped Mark really appreciate the method of the movement and he applies it in his personal and working life. A keen member of the Cardijn Institute and Community, Mark contributes by writing the quarterly enquiries.
Joe Catania
Joseph Catania is the Director of Faith and Mission at St Dominic’s Priory College,
a role he has held since 2023. Previously, Joseph served as Assistant Principal for
Religious Identity and Mission (APRIM) at Cardijn College for ten years, following
another decade as Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Liturgy at both Cardijn College and the Noarlunga-Seaford Catholic Parish. His pathway into Catholic education began after spending sixteen years in the trades, during which he owned a business and taught his craft.
