This month’s ACI webinar on Monday 28 April 205 will mark the 50th anniversary of the end of what Australians knew as the “Vietnam War” but which in Vietnam is known as the “American War.”
French-Vietnamese historian, Dr Claire Tran, will join Australian historian, Dr Val Noone, and former Australian YCW national secretary, Garry McDonald, to recall and reflect on the war’s impact on the YCW and YCS movements and their members in Vietnam, Australia and internationally.

Dr ClaireTran Thi Lien
Dr Claire Tran Thi Lien is a historian at the City University of Paris.
Much of her work has focused on the history of Catholicism in Vietnam and the relationship between politics and religions since the end of the 19th century, during the colonial period, that of the two Vietnam until today.
The political action of Catholics in the emergence of the Third Way political movement in South Vietnam constitutes another aspect of her research.
She has also worked on the question of religious circulation and its impacts in terms of elite training, in Vietnam, Southeast Asia and from a global history perspective. Dr Val Noone
Dr Val Noone is an Honorary Fellow of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne.
He will speak of his personal YCW experience re the Vietnam War as a priest in St Albans, Frankston and Ringwood, mixing with and learning from young workers, and how that fed into my peace activism.
He will also offer a short overview of Australian YCW responses to the war including the Vietnamese YCW political prisoners campaign.
Garry McDonald
Garry McDonald was national secretary of the Australian during the late 1960s at the peak of the Vietnam War.
He will share his memories of the impact of the war on Australian YCW leaders and their evolving attitudes.
